| Several things change when you become a sub-contractor. One of them is W-2s; you won’t have them anymore. You will self-employed. As a self-employed sub-contractor, you may (very likely) be asked to complete a W-9 when you are hired for a project. On that W-9, you’ll give your name, address, and your social security number (or your employer identification number). You SHOULD get a 1099-MISC if an individual or company pays you $600 or more. That 1099-MISC will show your self-employed income earned. Pay attention here – this is important!!! Even if you don’t get a 1099-MISC, you still must report the income you’ve earned on each of your individual jobs or projects. Do yourself a BIG favor; keep good records—from the very beginning.
