| The system is based upon the principle of duality. Than means that every economic or accounting event has two aspects—effort and reward, sacrifice and benefit, source and use—that offset or balance each other. Each transaction must be recorded with at least one debit and at least one credit, so that the total dollar amount of debits and the total dollar amount of credits equal. All accounting systems, no matter how complicated or sophisticated, are based upon this principle.
